When Kelly came to us, aesthetic skin care treatments were the furthest thing from her mind. A bout of skin cancer along the jawline brought her to Dr. Koch for a scar reduction procedure.
Here, Kelly shares her facial rejuvenation journey from fearing her basal cell carcinoma recovery to becoming a regular BOTOX and JUVÉDERM patient at our West Des Moines practice. To talk with us about the treatments she and others have come to love, please request a consultation or give us a call at (515) 277-5555.
I was sent to Koch Facial Plastic Surgery by my dermatologist after having a basal cell carcinoma removed from my jawline. She wanted to make sure my scar would be minimal. I had not seen the wound from the carcinoma removal, as it was dressed before leaving the dermatologist's office. When Dr. Cody Koch came in and took the dressing off, I saw the look on my mother's face, and I knew the wound must be large (it was). Dr. Cody explained how he would sew it up so there would be minimal scarring. By the time I walked out of his office, you could barely even see the stitches!
While waiting for Dr. Cody to prep for my procedure, I was looking at the brochures for BOTOX® and JUVÉDERM®. I told my Mom I had always wanted to try BOTOX but would probably not have come in for "just that." At my follow-up appointment, I talked with Dr. Cody about BOTOX and JUVÉDERM and made an appointment for both. That was 3 years ago, and I still see Dr. Cody for "touch-ups."
In addition, at the time of my procedure I received a gift certificate for a facial at their medical spa. I remember my friend telling me she has gotten facials on a regular basis for the last 20 years, but I always thought it was more of a "luxury" service, something I only got while on vacation at a hotel spa. I made an appointment with Ellen, and now I go once a month for some type of procedure, depending on the condition of my skin. I totally rely on Ellen's expertise and guidance as to the condition of my skin that month. Ellen always starts out by asking me how I'm feeling about my skin that month and what I have coming up (e.g., travel or business or a party). We then decide what procedure would benefit me the most.
I started using SkinMedica products about 3 years ago. I can't begin to tell you how many people give me compliments on my skin. Complete strangers ask me what I do/use to keep my skin looking so young and dewy. I was even asked by a friend of my mom's who is a plastic surgeon in Minnesota what I was using on my skin. He now uses SkinMedica in his own practice.
I will turn 57 in April, but am constantly told I look like I'm in my 40s. I have some sort of facial, sometimes a peel or microdermabrasion, once a month. I also continue to have BOTOX and JUVÉDERM as needed. My 80-year-old mother and 20-year-old daughter now go to Koch Facial Plastic Surgery & Spa, too.
I guess the lesson I learned is taking care of my skin is not a "luxury" service. I'm totally worth it!
