CoolSculpting® vs. Weight Loss (They’re Not the Same)

CoolSculpting at our Des Moines practice has become one of our most popular body sculpting procedures. Having said that, most people don’t fully understand how it works or why it is different than traditional weight loss or other body sculpting procedures. The fundamental concept to understand is that there is a difference between fat loss and weight loss.

What happens to fat cells after weight loss?

Generally, the number of fat cells in our body becomes a fixed number during our teenage years. Weight fluctuations do not affect the number of fat cells in our body; rather, it changes the size of the fat cells. Traditional weight loss causes those fat cells to shrink — but never to go away altogether.

What happens to fat cells after CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting reduces the number of fat cells in the treatment area(s) by inducing apoptosis (i.e., cell death). Once fat cells are eliminated, they will not return.

What is the science behind CoolSculpting?

Fat freezes at a higher temperature than other cells in the body. CoolSculpting uses precise cooling temperatures to target fat cells. Once the treated fat cells are frozen, they die and are naturally removed from the body. This process leaves the surrounding tissues unharmed.

What should I expect during my CoolSculpting treatment?

The entire treatment lasts around an hour. You sit in a recliner, and a thin gel pad is placed over the treatment area(s) to protect the skin. The CoolSculpting device uses gentle suction and cooling panels to freeze the fat cells.

In the first few minutes, you may feel minor discomfort before your body gets accustomed to the cold temperature. During the procedure, many patients read magazines, check email, or even nap. Treated areas may look red or slightly swollen for the day after treatment, but this will quickly resolve.

CoolSculpting can be a great option for anyone who has tried to lose weight via diet and exercise but can’t seem to ditch fat deposits in localized areas.
