With nonsurgical treatments such as injectables becoming so effective for anti-aging, West Des Moines men and women may have a hard time knowing if or when a surgical facelift, or a cheek and neck lift as it’s called at our practice, may be more effective. Choosing a facelift is a big decision, but there are a few signs that may tell you it’s time.
In this blog post, I’ll discuss some key indicators you may be ready for a surgical facelift.
Nonsurgical treatments aren’t doing the trick.
If fillers aren’t restoring enough volume, and lasers, BOTOX® Cosmetic, and topical products aren’t reducing major lines or folds on your lower face, that may be a sign it’s time for surgery. You may notice your nonsurgical results are short-lived, or that you need more frequent treatments, which can add up to higher expenses over time.
You’re noticing jowls and a square face shape.
Sagging or droopiness in the lower face can lead to loss of definition along the jawline and a face shape that appears more square than oval or “v-line.” A facelift is arguably the most effective way to address this, and it’s one of the most common concerns that drives people to pursue the surgery.
While facelifts of the past focused on superficially tightening the skin, today’s facelift addresses face shape at a deeper level by lifting and repositioning the underlying tissues. Learn more about how the facelift has evolved in our previous blog post.
You feel your outer appearance no longer reflects your inner youthfulness.
You may look in the mirror and feel as though you don’t recognize the person looking back at you, or you may feel that what you see doesn’t match up with the way you feel. If this disconnect is causing considerable frustration or insecurity, it’s a sign that a facelift may improve your life. Remember that the goal of a facelift is not to change the way you look or to turn the clock back dozens of years; it’s simply to help you look like the best version of you right now.
You’re physically and emotionally prepared.
You’re likely not ready for a surgical facelift until you’re healthy, able to take time off work to recover, and have a support system in place that can help you for the first few days of your recovery. If all these things are aligned for you, it may be worth it to schedule a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Plastic surgeons such as Dr. Brenton Koch and I have extensive experience meeting with facelift candidates, and we can offer helpful insight as to whether the procedure would be appropriate for you at the moment. If the timing is right, we can then help you move forward with a safe and effective facelift procedure.
