Procedures for a Well-Defined Jawline

A woman's chin is touched at her facial surgery consultation.

Having a sculpted, angular jawline is a popular goal these days. There are several ways to achieve this defined jawline, such as with the strategic use of dermal fillers and BOTOX® injections, at our Des Moines, IA, practice. Both women and men are coming to our practice saying they want to enhance the definition of their jawlines and chins in a way that looks natural.

Of course, the aesthetic goals of men and women differ, and it’s important that a provider understands how to create a more masculine appearance for men and a softer, more delicate jawline for women. We create custom treatment plans at Koch Facial Plastic Surgery & Spa, often combining jawline enhancement with other facial rejuvenation procedures to achieve the desired look.

Creating the sculpted jawline patients want can be accomplished either nonsurgically or surgically—or by combining different procedures.

How To Get the Ideal Jawline

Whether it’s because of selfies or the rise of virtual meetings, people want crisper jawlines that communicate a more active and youthful appearance.

The following procedures can help you get the look you want:

Injectables

BOTOX and specially formulated dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® aren’t often thought of when people consider ways to enhance their jawlines and chins. BOTOX is especially useful for women who want a slimmer jawline to create the classic V shape that’s associated with attractive female faces.

Jawline slimming is a procedure that involves injecting BOTOX into the masseter muscle at the top of the jaw. When this muscle (the “chewing” muscle) gets overdeveloped, it creates more of a square-shaped jaw. BOTOX relaxes the muscle in the same way it works to relax muscles that cause wrinkles.

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA is an effective jawline contouring injectable, as well. Even though adding volume seems counterintuitive for creating a more contoured jawline, fillers such as VOLUMA result in a more well-defined separation of the jaw and neck. Again, the skill of the injector is just as important as the product used.

Neck Liposuction

Younger patients whose skin retains most of its elasticity are good candidates for neck liposuction if they have excess fat that blurs the line between the neck and the jawline.

Even though there are nonsurgical treatments to reduce neck fat, liposuction is often the preferred approach. That’s because it produces immediate results after a single treatment. The cost of liposuction is actually quite competitive, considering that multiple treatments are needed for nonsurgical fat reduction procedures.

You can see how facial liposuction can create a contoured jawline in our gallery of before-and-after photos featuring actual patients.

Neck Lift

For women and men with lax neck skin, a surgical lift is usually the best approach. Faces age uniformly in most cases, so our surgeons rarely perform a standalone neck lift. We actually refer to facelift procedures and cheek and neck lifts to reflect the fact that both areas typically require plastic surgery at the same time. A cheek and neck lift minimizes jowling, one of the main complaints men and women have about their jawlines.
