Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Our bodies already have what we need to enhance our most attractive qualities. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy here in West Des Moines harnesses the powerful growth factors stored in your own platelets, creating a concentrated solution that improves your skin, hair, and other areas of the body that are showing signs of aging.

About PRP Therapy

PRP therapy has long been used by athletes to hasten recovery after injury. Blood platelets are rich in a variety of growth factors, which stimulate tissue regeneration throughout the body. When concentrated and administered to a particular treatment area, the growth factors produce amplified results. PRP therapy “fools” your body into producing more collagen at the injection site — and because the therapy uses your own platelets, it’s exceptionally well-tolerated.

PRP Procedures

At Koch Facial Plastic Surgery & Spa, we use PRP therapy to treat a variety of conditions, both on its own and as a complement to skincare treatments such as MicroLaserPeel®, micro-needling, INTRAcel RF microneedling, and laser skin resurfacing. Because all of these treatments tap into the skin’s power to heal itself, PRP therapy further enhances their results.

In our Des Moines office, we also use PRP as a solitary treatment for hair loss, wrinkles, and areas of hollowness below the eyes (commonly called the “tear troughs”). The procedure itself is quite simple: We begin by drawing your blood with a fine needle, just as you’d experience in a lab. Once we’ve gathered a sufficient amount, we use a special technique to separate the platelet-rich serum from the red cells and other components of blood.

Your practitioner then injects the serum into your desired treatment area. For example, if you’re undergoing PRP therapy for hair loss, your practitioner carefully injects the serum into your scalp. When it’s used for facial rejuvenation, we administer the serum just as we would BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers.

It’s not necessary to spend any time recuperating after PRP therapy. You can return to your regular activities immediately. Keep in mind that it takes several weeks for the results of PRP therapy to take full effect. Depending on the area of your body you’d like to treat, we may recommend a series of PRP therapy sessions, spaced several weeks apart, to give you the best results.

The results of your PRP treatment can last for a year or more, depending on the areas you have decided to treat.
