Pretty girl smiling after getting BOTOX

BOTOX® and fillers. Fillers and BOTOX. They are consistently the most popular cosmetic treatments, and according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), their popularity just keeps growing. Over the years, increasing numbers of men and women get BOTOX treatments at our West Des Moines practice.

Why Nonsurgicals Are So Popular

Nonsurgical cosmetic treatments, including injectables, are commonplace, and many new advances are so sophisticated that they now address a wider range of aesthetic concerns than in the past. In some cases, cosmetic treatments can provide a viable alternative to traditional plastic surgery without the downtime.

Americans underwent 17.5 million cosmetic procedures last year, and many patients opted for minimally invasive procedures that focused on the face, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ (ASPS) annual plastic surgery statistics report. As new trends become more popular, and the interest in surgical and minimally invasive procedures continues to grow, plastic surgery will remain in high demand.

As we start the new year, I thought it would be good to explore some of the treatments that will likely be popular in 2019. In fact, one trend we’re already seeing is the prevalence of the word “tweakments” to describe the subtle changes that many patients prefer over the more dramatic results of plastic surgery.

Treatment Trends

Patients considering facial rejuvenation want to look like better versions of themselves and favor procedures that create incremental changes. Even though pop culture celebrities continue to exert some influence on the treatments patients want, requests to look like this or that person are becoming much less frequent.

The treatments we expect to be the most popular in 2019 include:

  • BOTOX: Interest in using BOTOX to prevent wrinkles (“baby BOTOX”) continues to increase, as does millennial interest in BOTOX. According to the RealSelf website, interest in BOTOX is increasing the fastest among 18 to 24-year-old RealSelf users. While BOTOX is the frontrunner today, expect other products to enter the market as competitors.
  • Fillers: Injectables will remain the go-to cosmetic treatment for both women and men. Dermal fillers such as the JUVÉDERM product line are being continually refined to address specific treatment areas, including the lips, under the eyes, and the cheeks. Look for even more choices in the coming year.
  • Microneedling: This treatment is becoming one of the most popular procedures at our med spa, and we expect that trend to continue. We use SkinPen™ microneedling, which uses the body’s natural healing process to produce tighter, smoother skin.

The popularity of these treatments can be traced to a number of common factors, including their effectiveness. They require little to no downtime because they’re minimally invasive, they cost less than more invasive procedures, and the results are less noticeable so patients who value privacy rarely have people ask whether they’ve had “work” done.
