Woman in Des Moines, IA considering pros and cons of lip fillers

At Koch Facial Plastic Surgery & Spa, we are often asked the following questions when it comes to enhancing the volume (or lack thereof) in one’s lips. Whether your goal is full and flauntable or subtle and sweet, we’ve got options for creating your perfect pout with lip augmentation at our med spa in Des Moines.

Q. How much does lip augmentation cost?
A. When you consider the cost of lip filler (our favorite is JUVÉDERM® Ultra), it’s really a matter of what size syringe you are purchasing. Lip filler is purchased by the syringe, whereas BOTOX®, for example, is charged by the unit.

“I sometimes recommend the small syringe for those who want just a little bump in volume, especially patients nervous about looking overdone or trying it out for the first time,” said Pam Banyas, PA-C. “For those patients who want a more noticeable result, I usually suggest going with the larger syringe. It sometimes depends on how much volume the patient naturally has and the size of their mouth; we are all a little different.”

The costs for a Baby Lip Fill (subtle and sweet) versus Full Lip Fill (full and flauntable) are based on the size of JUVÉDERM syringe, with the smaller syringe running $385 and the larger syringe at $595.

Q. What are the options when it comes to types of lip filler?
A. The options for fillers are many. The “go-to” products at our office are JUVÉDERM Ultra and Restylane® Silk. They have been around for a long time, and reactions are incredibly rare (in fact, Pam has never experienced a patient reacting to either product).

Bruising and swelling are common for any injections but adverse reactions are not. Bruises can last up to 2 weeks but usually subside earlier than that. Swelling usually lasts a few days, but you should allow 2 weeks for the product to settle in and soften. Learn more about what to expect at your first lip filler treatment in this related blog post.

Both products are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring and safe soft tissue filler. Should you dislike it or have any issues, it can be reversed with an enzyme that dissolves it safely away.

You can see the type of results we achieve with dermal fillers in our patients’ before-and-after photos.

Q. How long do lip fillers last?
A. Both  JUVÉDERM and Restylane products are said to last up to 1 year. While the product can last that long, patient preference usually leads to a touch-up around 6 to 7 months. (Take a look at this Healthline article for more information about the longevity of dermal fillers.)

You may or may not need the same amount to touch-up as you did the first time, depending on how quickly you metabolize the product. Again, we are all a little different when it comes to natural volume and the rate you metabolize the product.
